At Stellhorn Chiropractic, we pride ourselves on being your trusted Fort Wayne chiropractor for all your spinal health and wellness needs. In our office, our experienced and knowledgeable staff offers a number of chiropractic services to suit your needs. One of the most common reasons people come into our office in the first place is that of ongoing back pain, which is sometimes caused by a herniated disc.

Back Pain Caused By a Herniated Disc

Back pain caused by a herniated disc can be very debilitating. In between each vertebrae in your spine, there is a fluid-filled disc that is meant to provide a cushion of sorts between the vertebrae. Unfortunately, injuries, trauma, and other health problems can cause the discs to become dislodged over time. This is known as a herniated disc. When you have a herniated disc, your vertebrae aren’t receiving the cushion and protection they normally get from the fluid-filled discs and, as a result, you may experience sharp and severe pain in a centralized location along your spine.

Herniated Disc Treatment Options

The good news is that there are chiropractic treatment options for those with herniated discs. Here in our office, for example, we highly recommend chiropractic adjustment and spinal decompression (often in conjunction with each other) as a means of treating herniated discs without the need for invasive treatments or medications. Specifically, a chiropractic adjustment is performed manually by a skilled chiropractor and involves the gentle manipulation of the spine to improve its alignment, which can help herniated and bulging discs return to their proper positions along the spine.

Furthermore, for instances where a herniated disc is caused by compression of the spine over time, a method known as spinal decompression may be recommended for treatment. Specifically, spinal decompression involves the use of specialized equipment to gently “stretch” the spine back out, especially in areas where it has been compressed or strained over time. This, in turn, opens up space between the vertebrae and aids discs in falling back into their proper positions. From there, many patients report relief from their back pain. In some cases, the relief is instant, though it sometimes takes more than one session for this form of back pain treatment.
